Hydrogen sulfide regulates insulin secretion and insulin resistance in diabetes mellitus, a new promising target for diabetes mellitus treatment? A review

Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: H2S plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism by affecting insulin secretion, apoptosis of islet β cells, insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, adipogenesis, lipolysis, and modulation of circadian-clock genes. Further studies are needed to determine whether H2S could be a promising target for diabetes mellitus treatment.

The impact of type of dietary protein, animal versus vegetable, in modifying cardiometabolic risk factors: A position paper from the International Lipid Expert Panel (ILEP)

Fjolla Zhubi-Bakija et al.

Summary: Proteins are crucial for metabolism, maintaining fluid and acid-base balance, and antibody synthesis. A balanced diet with both animal and plant proteins can help reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Optimum nutrition emphasizing plant-based proteins and certain animal-based proteins can positively affect cardiometabolic risk factors, while red meat intake is associated with increased risk mainly due to saturated fats.

Role of hydrogen sulfide in endothelial dysfunction: Pathophysiology and therapeutic approaches

Valentina Citi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role of hydrogen sulfide in cardiovascular diseases related to endothelial dysfunction, highlighting its importance as a vasoprotective gasotransmitter in regulating endothelial functionality. Possible therapeutic approaches using molecules able to release H2S are also emphasized.

N-Acetylcysteine and Hydrogen Sulfide in Coronavirus Disease 2019

Arno R. Bourgonje et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) may play a modulatory role in COVID-19 treatment by protecting against lung damage through its antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory actions. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) acts as a renowned antioxidant substance, potentially increasing endogenous H2S levels and promoting lung recovery. Additional randomized controlled trials are needed to further investigate the definitive role of H2S in COVID-19 therapy.
