Understanding the dynamics of the resource curse and financial development in China? A novel evidence based on QARDL model

Chun Jiang et al.

Summary: This study employs the Quantile Autoregressive Distributed Lag (QARDL) model to analyze the relationship between natural resource rent and financial development, revealing that the relationship is quantile-dependent and providing meaningful contributions. Findings reject parameter constancy for the Chinese economy and suggest a resource curse hypothesis, while also identifying GDP, gross capital formation, and trade openness as positive determinants of financial development. The study recommends addressing the negative linkage between resource rent and financial development in the long run.

The impact of resource curse on banking efficiency: Evidence from twelve oil producing countries

Muhammad Umar et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of the resource curse on the banking sector of twelve oil-producing countries. The study finds that during periods of price booms, banking efficiency declines, credit infections worsen, and the probability of default surges. These results confirm the presence of the resource curse and its effects on the financial development of countries overly reliant on natural resources.

Petroleum endowment and economic growth: examination of the resource curse phenomenon

Foued Saadaoui et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of oil resources endowment on economic growth, finding that proven oil resources negatively affect growth while oil rents are slightly positively correlated. This suggests that oil wealth limits opportunities for economic growth and that natural resources are negatively correlated with GDP through the quality of economic and financial institutions.

Assymetrical effect of oil and gas resource rent on economic growth: Empirical evidence from Ghana

Opoku Adabor et al.

Summary: The study reveals that oil resource rent significantly promotes economic growth, while gas resource rent has an adverse effect, supporting the resource blessing and resource curse hypotheses. Therefore, policies should focus on promoting the development of oil resource firms in the short term and setting up both oil and gas resource firms in developing countries in the long term.

Remittances, natural resource rent and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa

Pamela Efua Ofori et al.

Summary: The study found that oil rent and natural gas rent have a negative impact on economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, while forest rent has a positive impact; remittances have a positive marginal and net effect on economic growth, and can alleviate the negative impact of oil rent on economic growth; there is a threshold in individual countries, exceeding which will completely offset the negative impact of oil rents on economic growth.
