Effects of traditional block morphology on wind environment at the pedestrian level in cold regions of Xi'an, China

Wei Feng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the traditional characteristics of neighborhoods in Xi'an, China, and explores the relationship between block patterns and average pedestrian horizontal wind speeds. Two prediction formulas are obtained, aiming to optimize the parameter combinations of traditional block shapes and guide future construction activities to improve outdoor event space quality for modern urban residents. The research methods and results can provide reference for urban and block morphological transformation in similar climate zones.

Analysis of the Effects of Floor Area Ratio Change in Urban Street Canyons on Microclimate and Particulate Matter

Sukjin Jung et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between extreme weather and air pollution changes in urban street canyons, finding that floor area ratio has an impact on PM and microclimate elements. The results indicate a positive correlation between higher floor area ratio and increased PM concentration, as well as higher wind speed.

Impact Analysis of Urban Morphology on Residential District Heat Energy Demand and Microclimate Based on Field Measurement Data

Yanxue Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the relationship between urban morphology parameters and residential building space heating energy performance, showing that a larger floor area ratio can reduce heating energy consumption density, and that the heating load of residential districts is more sensitive to solar radiation. The analysis of detailed changes in the thermal environment suggests that central heating supply can dampen variations in local outdoor air temperatures.

Evaluating the heat island effect in a planned residential area using planning indicators

Yanwen Luo et al.

Summary: By determining planning indicators in urban planning, the intensity of urban development and formation of urban thermal environment can be controlled, mitigating the urban heat island effect. This study proposes an analytical method for quantifying UHI in a planned urban area using regression equations to estimate heat island potential in different types of sub-areas.

Effect of urban form on microclimate and energy loads: Case study of generic residential district prototypes in Nanjing, China

Mingjie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates eight generic residential district prototypes in Nanjing, China, and finds correlations between urban form, microclimate, and building energy performance. The results show that air temperature and direct shortwave radiation are negatively correlated with surface area ratio, and cooling and heating loads are negatively correlated with floor area ratio and surface area ratio, but positively correlated with mean sky view factor. If neglecting the microclimate effect, the differences in energy loads can reach 23.4%, with clear deviation in regression analyses.
