Provision of education for sustainability development and sustainability literacy in business programs in three higher education institutions in Brazil, Colombia and Peru

Melissa Franchini Cavalcanti-Bandos et al.

Summary: In the three Latin American higher education institutions surveyed, there is still a tendency to discuss issues related to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) but concrete actions are not sufficiently advanced. Compared to the USA and Europe, the surveyed institutions have not conceptually distinguished between sustainable development, ESD and sustainability literacy (SL) in their curriculum development, showing that there is still work to be done in embedding these concepts effectively. The paper suggests strategies for moving from the current embryonic stage to a more structured provision of sustainability literacy and a stronger emphasis on ESD.

Mapping sustainability initiatives in higher education institutions in Latin America

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: Many higher education institutions around the world are involved in various sustainability initiatives, but there is a lack of systematic international efforts to map them, especially in Latin America. An empirical study has analyzed the current status of sustainability initiatives among Latin American HEIs, revealing that over 80% of sampled universities are incorporating sustainability with a special focus on campus operations. This study is one of the most comprehensive investigations of sustainable development trends in universities across Latin America and emphasizes the importance of understanding the different levels of emphasis on sustainable development in order to drive continued and long-term actions.
