Autonomy support predicts language mindsets: Implications for developing communicative competence and willingness to communicate in EFL classrooms

Nourollah Zarrinabadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of teacher autonomy support on language mindsets and their subsequent impact on communicative competence and willingness to communicate in EFL students in Iran. The findings showed that growth language mindsets mediated the relationship between autonomy support and communicative competence and willingness to communicate. Students who perceived their teachers to be more autonomy-supportive were more likely to endorse growth language mindsets and consequently feel more competent and willing to use English in the classroom.
