United States immigration detention amplifies disease interaction risk: A model for a transnational ICE-TB-DM2 syndemic

Ashley R. Houston et al.

Summary: Despite declining rates of unauthorized migration, the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to increase detention and removal of unauthorized immigrants. Poor conditions in ICE detention centers contribute to malnutrition and increase the risk of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and Type 2 Diabetes (DM2). The interaction between TB and DM2 within ICE detention creates a syndemic, amplifying the health risks faced by detainees.

Punishing status and the punishment status quo: Solitary confinement in US Immigration prisons, 2013-2017

Konrad Franco et al.

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of solitary confinement placements in any carceral setting, focusing on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. The study reveals that individuals with mental illnesses are overrepresented in solitary confinement cases, which tend to last longer and are more likely to occur without infraction. It also highlights the overrepresentation of solitary confinement cases involving immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean, with African immigrants more likely to be confined for disciplinary reasons. Facility and institution type also play a role in placement patterns, with private facilities more prone to solitary confinement without infraction.
