Interrogating boundaries of the everyday nation through first impressions: experiences of young people in Norway

Marta Bivand Erdal et al.

Summary: This article investigates how young people in Norway experience and reflect upon first impressions, and explores the boundaries of the everyday nation. First impressions are conceptualized as boundaries of the everyday nation, characterized by heteronomy and multiplicity, embodying emotional dimensions through bodily encounters. Everyday encounters trigger both automatic reactions and conscious reflections, which may be managed by the individual.

The dis/comfort of white British nationhood: encounters, otherness and postcolonial continuities

Amy Clarke

Summary: This paper explores the role of discomfort in experiences of nationhood through interviews with white British middle-class individuals, as well as the uncomfortable encounters with the 'other' in a postcolonial Britain. It challenges the idea of privileged national belonging as wholly comfortable and exposes the relative comfort of white British people's nationhood. The paper offers insight into the uneven and hierarchical nature of contemporary nationhood, emphasizing the entanglement of comfort and discomfort in affective nationalism research.
