Impact of COVID-19 on GDP of major economies: Application of the artificial neural network forecaster

Pradyot Ranjan Jena et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused global health impacts and disruptions in economic activities, leading to sharp declines in GDP for all countries. A multilayer artificial neural network model is developed to forecast the GDP figures for the April-June quarter of 2020 for eight countries, with forecasting accuracy of less than 2% achieved during testing. Urgent rescue actions by governments are needed to address the alarming prospects of double-digit negative growth rates in annualized GDP growth.

Quantification of systemic risk from overlapping portfolios in the financial system

Sebastian Poledna et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the endogenous systemic risk created by financial markets, as well as the role of indirect interconnections and overlapping portfolios in it. By representing the financial system as a bipartite network, the systemic risk arising from overlapping portfolios can be quantified. The study shows that focusing only on direct interbank exposures may underestimate total systemic risk levels.
