Public engagement and AI: A values analysis of national strategies

Christopher Wilson

Summary: The calls for public engagement and participation in AI governance align with the public value management approach, but specific mechanisms and activities for engagement are rare. Sustainability of AI: The Case of Provision of Information to Consumers

Iakovina Kindylidi et al.

Summary: This paper aims to explore how sustainable development of artificial intelligence can be promoted from legal and consumer protection perspectives, with a focus on environmental and societal sustainability. After analyzing interdisciplinary literature on the topic of environmentally sustainable AI lifecycle and the latest EU policies and initiatives on consumer protection and sustainability, the adequacy of the current consumer protection framework in promoting sharing and substantiation of sustainability information in B2C contracts involving AI products and services will be examined. Additionally, the potential of AI-related initiatives in promoting sustainable AI development will be assessed, and a set of recommendations will be proposed to encourage a sustainable and environmentally-conscious AI lifecycle, enhancing information transparency among stakeholders, aligning various EU policies and initiatives, and ultimately empowering consumers.

An Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Europe Based on Human Rights

Celia Fernandez-Aller et al.

Summary: Global goals such as the UN 2030 Agenda and the SDGs require an inclusive and sustainable AI strategy, rather than one focused purely on competitiveness. A systemic approach to developing AI solutions and using the SDGs as a framework for testing the desirability of AI solutions are essential in achieving the SDGs. Europe's multiculturalism and international collaboration framework give it an advantage in becoming a global leader in promoting inclusive and sustainable AI, which can make a significant contribution to the achievement of the SDGs.

The legitimacy gap of algorithmic decision-making in the public sector: Why it arises and how to address it

Pascal D. Konig et al.

Summary: The increasing adoption of Algorithmic Decision-Making (ADM) systems by the state to enhance administrative functions and public services effectiveness has brought challenges of opaqueness, unfairness, and value trade-offs. This paper argues that the fundamental challenge lies in how these systems alter the epistemic bases of decision-making, and proposes addressing the resulting legitimacy gap through stakeholder involvement by adapting research on participatory technology assessments to ADM system design.
