Stronger and Safer Together: Motivations for and Challenges of (Trans)National Collaboration in Investigative Reporting in Latin America

Lourdes M. Cueva Chacon et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing interest in investigative journalism in Latin America, there is a lack of research on collaboration across newsrooms in the region. This study examines the reasons why Latin American journalists are seeking to participate in national and transnational collaborative projects, the challenges they face, and the role of digital technologies in facilitating such collaborations. Findings indicate that collaborations are pursued to enhance project impact, reach larger audiences, and achieve comprehensive coverage, with safety being a significant motivation for journalists to work together. However, coordinating teams-especially at the transnational level-remains a major challenge.
