The role of difficulties in emotion regulation in predicting empathy and patient-centeredness in pre-clinical medical students: a cross-sectional study

Stefano Ardenghi et al.

Summary: Empathy and patient-centeredness decrease during clinical years of study, potentially due to difficulties in emotion regulation. This study found that emotion dysregulation negatively predicted empathy and patient-centeredness in medical students, and female students had higher levels of empathy and patient-centeredness. Providing emotion regulation strategies in pre-clinical curriculum can help sustain empathy and patient-centeredness in medical students.

Personal values among first-year medical and nursing students: A cross-sectional comparative study

Stefano Ardenghi et al.

Summary: Collaboration in healthcare is essential, but differences in personal values may lead to disagreements between physicians and nurses. The study aimed to compare personal values of medical and nursing students, finding that medical students scored higher on dominance and personal success, while female students scored higher on other-oriented and social values, and male students scored higher on personal and selfish values. Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values could be a valuable framework for interprofessional education.
