Mental Health During the First Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Review and Recommendations for Moving Forward

Lara B. Aknin et al.

Summary: COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on people's mental health, with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and distress, particularly in the early stages of the outbreak. However, suicide rates, life satisfaction, and loneliness remained relatively stable during the first year of the pandemic. In response to these findings, seven recommendations are proposed to support mental health during and beyond the pandemic.

COVID-19 preventive interventions for high-risk pregnant women and preschool children: a rehearsal for the baby boomers' old-age pandemic? Interventions preventives pour les femmes enceintes et les jeunes enfants a risque pendant et apres la COVID-19: une preparation a la pandemie du vieillissement des baby-boomers?

Richard E. Tremblay

Summary: A consensus has been reached based on large-scale research over the past 30 years regarding the significance of prenatal and early childhood development. Preventive interventions are crucial during the early stages of life to prevent long-lasting physical, psychological, educational, and social issues. The COVID-19 pandemic has likely increased the demand for such interventions. Governments should invest in supporting pregnant women and preschool children and evaluate the implementation of these interventions to avoid future healthcare and retirement costs.

COVID-19 and the impacts on youth mental health: emerging evidence from longitudinal studies

Nicholas Chadi et al.

Summary: Several experts have warned about the potential devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and related confinement measures on the mental health of youth. However, these claims are largely based on cross-sectional data collected during the pandemic, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. In this commentary, the authors critically evaluate emerging longitudinal studies that cover the period before and during the pandemic, focusing on internalizing and externalizing disorders, suicidality, eating disorders, and substance use. The authors also discuss important research considerations for monitoring the long-term impacts of the pandemic on youth mental health and promising interventions to mitigate potential long-lasting consequences.

Quarantots, quarankids, and quaranteens: how research can contribute to mitigating the deleterious impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on health behaviours and social inequalities while achieving sustainable change

Lise Gauvin et al.

Summary: The adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors are crucial for youth development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to reduced physical activity, increased sedentary behavior, and unhealthy eating, particularly among vulnerable groups. To mitigate these impacts, evidence-based public health efforts should be strengthened, and complex interventions should be developed to promote healthy behaviors and eating guidelines.

Learning loss due to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic

Per Engzell et al.

Summary: School closures during the pandemic in the Netherlands led to a learning loss of about 3 percentile points or 0.08 standard deviations for primary school students, with a larger impact on students from less-educated homes. The study suggests that the effect is due to the cumulative impact of learned knowledge rather than temporary influences.

Depression and anxiety symptoms in young adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: evidence from a Canadian population-based cohort

Kia Watkins-Martin et al.

Summary: The study in Quebec found that depression and anxiety symptoms in young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic were mostly similar to those reported in 2018, with a slight increase in severe depression rates. Most COVID-19-related stressors and pre-existing vulnerabilities were not linked to symptom changes, except for living alone and pre-existing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Further investigation is needed to explore the increased rate of severe depression.

Effective Programs in Elementary Mathematics: A Meta-Analysis

Marta Pellegrini et al.

Summary: The review found positive outcomes for tutoring programs and professional development focused on classroom organization and management. However, professional development aimed at improving teachers' understanding of math content and pedagogy had little impact on student achievement. Additionally, professional development intended to help in the adoption of new curricula had a small but significant impact for traditional curricula, but not for digital curricula.
