Summary: This study examined the antecedents of boredom in Chinese university students learning English as a foreign language, finding that control-value appraisals predict boredom uniquely or interactively. Qualitative data from interviews with students and teachers showed more complexities in the associations between control-value appraisals and boredom, providing further support for the Control-Value Theory and shedding light on boredom instigation in the L2 learning context.
