Is gold a hedge or a safe-haven asset in the COVID-19 crisis?

Md Akhtaruzzaman et al.

Summary: The study found that gold played different roles as a hedge or safe-haven asset in different phases of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, acting as a safe haven for stock markets in Phase I and experiencing increased investment in Phase II as a 'flight-to-safety asset'. Hedging costs also significantly increased during Phase II.

The safe-haven property of precious metal commodities in the COVID-19 era

Amine Lahiani et al.

Summary: The study reveals that precious metal commodities still impact the S&P 500 stock market index in an asymmetric manner but have lost their safe-haven role. Aluminum has an asymmetric effect on S&P 500 in the short-run, while platinum, palladium, copper, and gold have a symmetric effect on S&P 500. Palladium, copper, and gold act as safe-haven assets against the S&P 500 stock market index in the short-term, but none of them serve as safe-haven assets in the long run.

Realised volatility connectedness among Bitcoin exchange markets

Qiang Ji et al.

Summary: This study examines the connectedness of Bitcoin exchanges based on daily realized volatility, finding that Coinbase is the clear leader in the market while Binance ranks surprisingly weak. The positions of exchanges within the connectedness network appear to be driven by their own characteristics, with trading in USD rather than USDT standing out as a significant factor. Safer asset withdrawal seems to have a greater impact on volatility connectedness among Bitcoin exchanges than trading volume.
