#IStandWithDan versus #DictatorDan: the polarised dynamics of Twitter discussions about Victoria's COVID-19 restrictions

Timothy Graham et al.

Summary: This article examines two related hashtag campaigns in response to the Victorian State Government's handling of Australia's significant COVID-19 second wave in mid-to-late 2020. Through a mixed-methods approach, it reveals how hyper-partisan campaigners mobilized communities on Twitter and amplified their messages by co-opting journalists and politicians. The comprehensive analysis of Twitter data provides insights into the evolution of political hashtag campaigns and how actors exploited specific dynamics of Twitter to progress their agendas.
