Child-Parent Relationships and Older Adults' Health: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Between China and the United States

Kinship bereavement and psychological well-being of US Chinese older women and men

Summary: This study examines the relationship between kinship bereavement and the psychological well-being of Chinese American older women and men. The results suggest that widowhood increases loneliness for both genders. In addition, close relative/friend loss is associated with more stress in women, and the loss of children/grandchildren is linked to stronger anxiety. The coefficients for close relative in the stress model are significantly different between genders. The variation in patterns of kinship bereavement may be attributed to Chinese cultural attitudes toward death.

Family Relationships and Cognitive Function Among Community-Dwelling US Chinese Older Adults

Summary: This study investigated the impact of family typology on cognition among U.S. Chinese immigrants, finding that older adults with detached and commanding conflicted typologies had lower global cognition. Family typology was associated with episodic memory, working memory, and MMSE performance, highlighting the importance of considering multifaceted family relationships in interventions for cognitive function.
