Gendered syndemic of intimate partner violence, alcohol misuse, and HIV risk among peri-urban, heterosexual men in South Africa

Abigail M. Hatcher et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the associations between men's use of alcohol, violence, and HIV risk behaviors using a gendered syndemics lens. The results suggest that alcohol use, violence, and inequitable gender views are associated with risky sexual behaviors, and there are interactions between these factors. Targeting intersections between syndemic conditions may help prevent HIV among heterosexual men in African urban settings.

Intersectionality and syndemics: A commentary

Thurka Sangaramoorthy et al.

Summary: This commentary discusses the possibilities and challenges of combining intersectionality and syndemics. The authors argue that while intersectionality and syndemics can be integrated, there are methodological, ontological, and epistemological challenges. They also suggest that syndemics does not add any benefit to health scholarship grounded in intersectional analysis. The authors maintain that if intersectionality and syndemics are to be in conversation, it must be done with recognition of their differences in methodology, praxis, and power. They argue that syndemics has the potential to undermine the significance of intersectionality in addressing health equity issues.
