Differences in the Concentration of the Fecal Neurotransmitters GABA and Glutamate Are Associated with Microbial Composition among Healthy Human Subjects

Hend Altaib et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between fecal GABA concentration and microbial composition in over 70 human participants, finding that high-GABA samples had lower microbial diversity. Specifically, the family Bifidobacteriaceae exhibited high abundance in the high-GABA group, suggesting a potential link between Bifidobacterium abundance and high fecal GABA content in healthy individuals. These findings may contribute to the development of probiotics to enhance microbial GABA production, supporting overall physical and psychiatric health of the host.
