Is emotional exhaustion only the result of work experiences? A diary study on daily hassles and uplifts in different life domains

Uta Klusmann et al.

Summary: The study found that work-related uplifts and hassles were related to emotional exhaustion. In addition, private life uplifts were associated with a decrease in emotional exhaustion, while private life hassles were associated with an increase in emotional exhaustion. Although the variance in emotional exhaustion explained by private events was small, the study suggests that burnout symptoms may not be completely independent from individuals' daily lives outside of work.
