Monitoring global land-use efficiency in the context of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Ronald C. Estoque et al.

Summary: The study found that Europe and Northern America are the least efficient regions in terms of land use efficiency, while Eastern and South-Eastern Asia are catching up. Although land consumption rate and population growth rate are positively correlated globally, this is not always the case across regions. The concept of land use efficiency in the SDGs has important limitations, such as not including changes in in situ natural capital and the external impacts of cities.

How does urban expansion interact with cropland loss? A comparison of 14 Chinese cities from 1980 to 2015

Ying Tu et al.

Summary: The research revealed a pattern of rapid urban expansion and extensive cropland loss across all selected cities (except for Harbin). Urban expansion was identified as the dominant driver of cropland loss, leading to a more spatially irregular and fragmented distribution of cropland.

Dominant urban form and its relation to nighttime land surface temperature in the rapidly urbanizing National Capital Region of India

Saurav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the urban growth pattern in India's National Capital Region and found that nighttime Land Surface Temperature (LST) increased in the urban core area, especially under infilling growth mode. Linear regression models showed a positive correlation between nighttime LST and built-up area, as well as infilling growth mode, while a negative correlation was observed with edge expansion and urban green spaces.

Urbanization and urban land use efficiency: Evidence from regional and Addis Ababa satellite cities, Ethiopia

Nesru H. Koroso et al.

Summary: This study reveals the prevalence of low urban land use efficiency in Ethiopia, with the rate of land consumption far exceeding population growth rate, and slow urban infill and densification. Conversion of agricultural land to urban use has resulted in idle land within built-up areas.

Spatio-temporal patterns of urbanization in the Kolkata Urban Agglomeration: A dynamic spatial territory-based approach

Saurav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the spatio-temporal patterns of urban growth in the Kolkata Urban Agglomeration in eastern India, revealing a significant increase in urban land share and distinct intra-urban variations between inner and outer spatial extents. The inner city zone primarily experienced growth through infilling, while the outer extents showed complex growth patterns with a decrease in outlying growth and increases in infilling and edge-expansion.

Compact or disperse? Evolution patterns and coupling of urban land expansion and population distribution evolution of major cities in China, 1998-2018

Handuo Deng et al.

Summary: Research has shown that over the past two decades, population decentralization and land expansion consolidation have been prevalent. Small, scattered sub-centers in the suburbs have declined while large sub-centers have expanded. Better coupling of both dimensions was detected in smaller cities with more rapid and dispersed land expansion.
