Are rapid and inclusive energy and climate transitions oxymorons? Towards principles of responsible acceleration

Tomas Moe Skjolsvold et al.

Summary: This perspective piece explores ways to responsibly accelerate transitions in energy and climate research, highlighting tensions between managerial and democratic literature, as well as the paradoxes that come with accelerated transitions. The discussion also touches on the conflicts between core and peripheral sites that rapid transitions can contribute to, emphasizing the role of societal conditions in shaping transitions and social order. The authors conclude by discussing the responsibility of transition scholars to situate their work within broader debates about future socio-technical orders and propose three principles for responsible acceleration.

The paradox of the energy revolution in China: A socio-technical transition perspective

Shengqing Xu

Summary: China is undergoing an energy revolution with a goal for renewable energy to comprise 50% of energy consumption by 2050 and to reduce carbon intensity by 60-65% by 2030 from the 2005 level. The paradox of limited renewable energy and expanding fossil energy hinders the challenge to fossil energy dominance in the short term, despite progress made in renewable energy development. This energy transition requires proper mechanisms to accelerate the process while balancing the inertia and importance of traditional energy industries.

Consumer acceptance of the energy transition in Switzerland: The role of attitudes explained through a hybrid discrete choice model

Alessandra Motz

Summary: The study focuses on Swiss households' preferences for electricity generation sources, finding that price and reliability evaluations vary depending on the energy source used. Households with a higher environmental concern tend to prefer 100% renewable energy, while informed optimists are more accepting of nuclear power.

An assessment of consumers' willingness to utilize solar energy in China: End-users' perspective

Muhammad Irfan et al.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing Chinese consumers' willingness to use solar energy for households and finds that factors such as perception about self-effectiveness, environmental concern, awareness of solar energy, and belief of solar energy benefits have positive effects on this willingness, while the cost of solar energy has a negative impact. The perception of neighbors' partic-ipation has an insignificant effect. The research emphasizes the importance of transforming social norms, raising consumer awareness, redesigning policy frameworks, and promoting the benefits of solar energy through integrated efforts.

Jobs vs. climate justice? Contentious narratives of labor and climate movements in the coal transition in Germany

Tobias Kalt

Summary: The conflict between climate and labor movements over fossil fuels and industrial jobs highlights struggles over justice in the coal transition in Germany. Despite attempts to construct narratives around justice claims, issues with distributional, restorative, procedural, and recognition justice components create tensions between jobs and climate narratives. The inability to resolve these tensions weakens counterhegemonic challenges and delays the coal transition, emphasizing the need for transformative just transitions.
