The Nocebo Effect: A Review of Contemporary Experimental Research

Branka Bagaric et al.

Summary: Nocebo effect is invoked by manipulating expectations, conditioning, or both, successfully covering a range of domains (such as pain, nausea, itch, skin dryness) and levels (sensory, affective, psychological, and behavioral). Various characteristics of the conditioning procedure and participants' emotions, expectations, and dispositions are found to be related to the nocebo response, shedding insight into the possible mechanisms of the nocebo effect. Successful and unsuccessful strategies in diminishing the nocebo response are identified.

Suggestibility in functional neurological disorder: a meta-analysis

Lillian Wieder et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with FND exhibit higher suggestibility than controls on standardised behavioural scales and are more responsive to suggestive symptom induction. These results suggest that atypical suggestibility may be a risk factor for FND and could potentially aid in diagnosis and treatment.

Using Positive Attribute Framing to Attenuate Nocebo Side Effects: A Cybersickness Study

Alanna Mao et al.

Summary: This study found that positive attribute framing can reduce nocebo side effects relative to negative framing and general warnings, and may even prevent them altogether. Therefore, positive framing could be an effective way to reduce the risk of side effects.

Systematic review of psychotherapy for adults with functional neurological disorder

Myles Gutkin et al.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common and disabling disorder which is often challenging to treat. Psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy (PDT), have shown medium-sized benefits for FND patients in terms of physical symptoms, mental health, well-being, function, and resource use. However, better quality studies are needed to further validate these findings.
