Childhood left-behind experience and labour market outcomes in China

Haining Wang et al.

Summary: The long-term effects of childhood left-behind experience due to parental migration in China can have detrimental impacts on labor market outcomes in adulthood, particularly for males, those from medium- and low-income families, and individuals currently residing in rural areas. These effects may be mediated through educational attainment, health status, cognitive ability, personality traits, and personal values.

Mama loves you: The gender wage gap and expenditure on children's education in China

Haining Wang et al.

Summary: The study finds that an increase in the female-to-male wage ratio is positively associated with higher educational investment in individual children, especially for male children and those in high school. Heterogeneity exists in the effects of the gender wage gap across different subgroups. Factors such as family income, economic growth, and female bargaining power partially mediate the relationship between the gender wage gap and children's education expenditure.

Measures of human capital and the mechanics of economic growth

Xiaobei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examines how human capital affects economic growth and convergence using panel data from China at the provincial level. Different measures of human capital were applied to an enhanced growth model, and the results showed that economic convergence is highly dependent on human capital. The negative impact of low human capital levels in the poorest areas almost outweighed the positive benefits of being backward due to lower initial income.

kinkyreg: Instrument-free inference for linear regression models with endogenous regressors

Sebastian Kripfganz et al.

Summary: In models with endogenous regressors, the use of instrumental variables is common for identification purposes. The kinkyreg command introduces a new approach to identification by exploiting nonorthogonality conditions without the need for instrumental variables. This approach provides sensitivity analysis for standard instrumental-variables inference and allows assessment of previously untestable exclusion restrictions.

The Impact of Means-Tested Premium Rebates and Tax Penalties on the Demand for Private Hospital Cover in Australia

Anam Bilgrami et al.

Summary: Many governments intervene in private health insurance markets to balance efficiency and equity. In Australia, means-testing premium rebates and increasing tax penalty rates have been evaluated to understand their impact on private health insurance coverage. The study suggests that increasing tax penalty rates had a stronger impact on increasing private health insurance coverage than means-testing premium rebates.

Education and consumption: Evidence from migrants in Chinese cities

Zhiming Cheng

Summary: The study shows that each additional year of education among domestic migrants in Chinese cities leads to approximately a 7% increase in monthly household consumption expenditure per capita, with a stronger positive effect seen among those with higher incomes and a weaker effect among lower income groups. Migrants' social participation, social engagement, risk preference, and permanent settlement intentions partially mediate the relationship between education and consumption.

Parent-Child Information Frictions and Human Capital Investment: Evidence from a Field Experiment

Peter Bergman

Summary: This study shows that providing information about a child's missed assignments can reduce parents' biased beliefs about their child's effort and improve student achievement. Policy simulations from the model suggest that improving school reporting or providing more information to parents can increase learning at low cost.
