Transitioning to co-management in Caribbean reef fisheries: Tela Bay case study

A. Rivera et al.

Summary: Caribbean fisheries face challenges in implementing co-management, such as weak institutions, financial constraints, reduced group cohesion due to stakeholder heterogeneity, and lack of legal agreements. However, successful implementation in Tela Bay was achieved through bridging organizations facilitating collaboration and social capital reflected in community participation, cooperation, trust, and conflict resolution mechanisms. The case study demonstrates that co-management in Caribbean fisheries requires institution building and governance tailored to the socio-economic context of each fishery.
