Recognize fish as food in policy discourse and development funding

Abigail Bennett et al.

Summary: The international development community is not meeting targets for alleviating global malnutrition, despite the crucial role fish plays in food and nutrition security. Shifting focus towards innovative policies and investments that promote nutrition-sensitive and socially equitable capture fisheries and aquaculture is essential for sustainable development.

Why are fisheries agencies unable to facilitate the development of alternative livelihoods in small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in the global South? A case study of the Tam Giang lagoon, Viet Nam

Tong Thi Hai Hanh

Summary: This article investigates the challenges in establishing alternative livelihoods in small-scale fisheries, attributing the difficulties to fisheries agencies' failure to consider the actual needs of fishers and aquaculturists, lack of motivation in facilitating alternative livelihoods, and insufficient support from local governments. The article suggests developing leadership skills and providing knowledge of alternative livelihoods to address these issues.

Anemia in Ugandan pregnant women: a cross-sectional, systematic review and meta-analysis study

Felix Bongomin et al.

Summary: The study in Uganda found a low prevalence of anemia in pregnancy, mostly occurring in the second or third trimester with majority being microcytic anemia cases. Pregnant women with anemia had lower levels of anthropometric measurements and blood pressure, suggesting potential nutritional causes. A meta-analysis of 17 studies in Uganda revealed a higher overall prevalence of anemia in pregnancy, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and screening predictors.
