Alcohol and Tobacco Use in a Tuberculosis Treatment Cohort during South Africa's COVID-19 Sales Bans: A Case Series

Bronwyn Myers et al.

Project Khanya: results from a pilot randomized type 1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial of a peer-delivered behavioural intervention for ART adherence and substance use in HIV care in South Africa

Jessica F. Magidson et al.

Summary: The pilot trial in South Africa showed that the Khanya intervention was highly feasible and acceptable for improving ART adherence and reducing alcohol use. Over six months, ART adherence increased by 6.4% in the Khanya group, while it declined by 22.3% in the ETAU group. Both groups experienced significant reductions in alcohol use.

Associations Between Patterns of Alcohol Use and Viral Load Suppression Amongst Women Living with HIV in South Africa

B. Myers et al.

Summary: In women living with HIV, occasional and frequent heavy episodic drinking (HED) were associated with suboptimal ART adherence, while frequent HED was also associated with viral non-suppression. Adherence partially mediated the relationship between frequent HED and viral non-suppression.
