Anticipation of aversive visual stimuli lengthens perceived temporal duration

Ville Johannes Harjunen et al.

Summary: The study investigated whether the anticipation of uncertain visual threats resulted in underestimation or overestimation of perceived duration, and found that anticipation of aversive images led to overestimation of time. This overestimation was more pronounced in individuals who reported feeling more anxious while anticipating the image.

Early posterior negativity indicates time dilation by arousal

Ezgi Oezoglu et al.

Summary: Our study found that arousing stimuli led to temporal overestimation and increased EPN amplitude, with a significant correlation between time dilation and EPN amplitude that cannot be explained by stimulus valence confounds. We suggest that EPN may indicate an arousal-based increase in the speed of our mental clock, in line with the pacemaker-accumulator model of human timing.
