Detecting cocoa plantations in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana and their implications on protected areas

Itohan-Osa Abu et al.

Summary: Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana are the largest producers of cocoa in the world, but cocoa cultivation has led to significant forest loss in both countries. A method utilizing remote sensing imagery and a Random Forest algorithm was developed to identify cocoa plantations, successfully detecting these plantations in both countries and revealing their encroachment into protected areas.

Customary power, farmer strategies and the dynamics of access to protected forestlands for farming: Implications for Ghana's forest bioeconomy

Eric Mensah Kumeh et al.

Summary: In the last decade, there has been a push for bioeconomy as a means of decarbonisation and addressing socio-ecological crises, particularly in developing countries. This transition's success in countries like Ghana partly hinges on its compatibility with existing land access regimes. The study in Ghana reveals a competition between state and traditional institutions for control over forest reserve lands, impacting forest-dependent communities' access to the resources they need for livelihoods.

Assessing Land Use and Land Cover Change and Farmers' Perceptions of Deforestation and Land Degradation in South-West Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa

Jean-Luc Kouassi et al.

Summary: The study assessed land use and land cover change and farmers' perceptions of deforestation and land degradation in south-western Cote d'Ivoire. The major drivers of deforestation perceived by farmers include population growth, extensive agriculture, migration, and logging. Land degradation primarily evolved through a shortened fallow period and inappropriate application of inputs.
