The Impact of Social Desirability Pressures on Whites' Endorsement of Racial Stereotypes: A Comparison Between Oral and ACASI Reports in a National Survey

Tobias H. Stark et al.

Summary: In the past 60 years, the expression of anti-black prejudice among white Americans in face-to-face survey interviews has decreased significantly. An experiment conducted in 2008 showed that confidentially reporting stereotypes of blacks through audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) resulted in a slightly but significantly higher negative views of blacks compared to oral reports. Surprisingly, this shift to ACASI also led to a similarly large increase in negative views of whites. Furthermore, the predictive validity of ACASI reports was not higher than that of oral reports. This suggests that social desirability pressures do not seriously compromise the oral reporting of racial stereotypes in face-to-face interviews.
