Retail fresh vegetables as a potential source of Salmonella infection in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Thuan Khanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: From July 2017 to Jan 2019, a study in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam found that 12.9% of 572 retail fresh vegetable samples were contaminated with Salmonella. The highest isolation rate was in the rainy season. The predominant serovar was Salmonella Weltevreden, which was susceptible to all tested antibiotics. Retail fresh vegetables were identified as an important potential vehicle of Salmonella transmission in the region.

Prevalence, Serovar, and Antimicrobial Resistance of Nontyphoidal Salmonella in Vegetable, Fruit, and Water Samples in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Dao Thi Anh Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study found that Salmonella was prevalent in vegetable, fruit, and water samples in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, with certain serovars being isolated from both vegetable and water samples. The most common antimicrobial resistance was observed against tetracycline, followed by chloramphenicol, ampicillin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and nalidixic acid. These data suggest that both environmental water and vegetables were contaminated with Salmonella, including multidrug resistant strains.
