Improvement of thermal comfort by hydraulic-driven ventilation device and space partition arrangement towards building energy saving

Fang'ai Chi et al.

Summary: In densely populated cities in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, the rainwater potential on roofs can be utilized as a clean and renewable energy supplier. A novel hydraulic-driven ventilation device has been proposed to utilize the potential energy of rainwater collected on the roof for indoor air movement.

Energy efficiency optimization of PCM and aerogel-filled multiple glazing windows

Shu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the energy performance of ten different glazing configurations in the severe cold climate of China. The results showed that adding PCM into the glass window degrades its thermal performance in winter, but using silica aerogel together with a PCM can improve thermal comfort. Adjusting optical parameters of the glass significantly enhances the energy efficiency of the glass window coupled with the silica aerogel and PCM.

Optimizing energy efficiency and thermal comfort in building green retrofit

Qing Li et al.

Summary: The study presents a simulation-based energy-comfort optimization model to evaluate design alternatives and balance multiple objectives in building green retrofit, using a school building in Wuhan city of China as a case study. Four critical building parameters were identified to significantly impact energy efficiency and thermal comfort, resulting in approximately 4% energy savings with an improved level of environmental comfort. This research benefits designers and construction managers in achieving better energy efficiency and comfort in green building development.

Effects of different window configurations on energy consumption in building: Optimization and economic analysis

Ali Heydari et al.

Summary: This research used DesignBuilder software to simulate building energy efficiency, investigating the impact of different window configurations on energy consumption, with a focus on local climate conditions. By analyzing the heat transfer coefficient and cooling/heating load of single-pane and double-pane windows, the optimal window configuration for the Semnan climate conditions was identified.

Sustainable reflective triple glazing design strategies: Spectral characteristics, air-conditioning cost savings, daylight factors, and payback periods

Kirankumar Gorantla et al.

Summary: This study aims to propose an energy-efficient triple glazing unit for reducing cooling and heating costs in buildings, while experimentally testing the spectral performance of reflective glasses. The results indicate that the TWG35 window glass unit in the S-E orientation is the most energy-efficient glazing in alleviating this critical challenge, with an air-conditioning cost-saving of 16.72 $/m(2) among all other studied window glass units, while the TWG33 window glass unit has the optimal-lowest payback period (2.1 years) with a net annual cost saving of 16.55 $/m(2).

Strategy for achieving long-term energy efficiency of European single-family buildings through passive climate adaptation

Luka Pajek et al.

Summary: This study simulated the implications of passive design measures on heating and cooling energy use of single-family residential buildings in European climates. It found that a lower window to floor ratio is the most universally applicable design measure to counterbalance the projected effect of a warming climate, but it is difficult to neutralise the projected climate change effects even with the best performing combination of passive design measures. Nonetheless, reasonably low energy use can still be assured solely by passive building design in certain climate locations.
