Geotechnical characterization of plastic waste materials in pavement subgrade applications

Mukhtar Abukhettala et al.

Summary: The scarcity of traditional construction materials has led researchers to explore alternatives, with plastic waste gaining attention as a potential material. Recycling plastic waste into construction materials not only reduces environmental impacts but also benefits various industries.

Effect of compaction delay on the strength and consolidation properties of cement-stabilized subgrade soil

Zeynab Nazari et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effect of compaction delay on the mechanical and consolidation characteristics of cement-stabilized subgrade soil, finding that delayed samples exhibit reduced maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength compared to non-delayed ones, indicating a destructive effect on the mechanical properties of the soil-cement samples in the long run. Additionally, higher compaction delay yields mixtures with higher compression index and void ratio, and regression models show that variations in cement content notably influence the maximum dry density and unconfined compressive strength.

The impacts of nano-SiO2 and silica fume on cement kiln dust treated soil as a sustainable cement-free stabilizer

Sadegh Ghavami et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nano-silica and silica fume on the characteristics of engineering clay soil stabilized with cement kiln dust. Results showed that an optimal addition of 1% nano-silica and 15% silica fume enhances the geotechnical properties of CKD-treated soil with high sustainability.

Mechanistic-empirical analysis of asphalt pavement fatigue cracking under vehicular dynamic loads

Jingnan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that dynamic load coefficients increase as pavement roughness increases or axle loads decrease. The impulse response method was used to calculate tensile strains of the asphalt layer under random loads, and an accumulative fatigue damage ratio was proposed for M-E pavement analysis.

Fatigue life prediction for orthotropic steel deck details with a nonlinear accumulative damage model under pavement temperature and traffic loading

Sheng Yu et al.

Summary: A novel fatigue damage regression analysis model and a new fatigue reliability assessment method based on the nonlinear fatigue model were developed to predict the fatigue life of details in orthotropic steel decks. The study considered the impact of long-term moving vehicle loads and asphalt concrete pavement temperatures on fatigue life, and developed a limit equation that takes into account traffic conditions and pavement temperature for fatigue life prediction.

Moisture-dependent resilient modulus of chemically treated subgrade soil

Nurmunira Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study presents extensive experimental studies on obtaining the resilient modulus-suction (MR-s) relationship of treated subgrade soil using a BMA additive. The BMAH samples showed significant improvement in MR at higher suction levels compared to BMA samples, but this effect was not sustained under fully saturated conditions. The study also found that seasonal variation in moisture content affects the subgrade performance.

Repurposing of COVID-19 single-use face masks for pavements base/subbase

Mohammad Saberian et al.

Summary: This study proposes an innovative way to reduce pandemic-generated waste by recycling used face masks with other waste materials for civil constructions. Experimental results show that blends of shredded face masks and recycled concrete aggregate can meet the requirements for pavements base/subbase applications.

Use of secondary additives in fly ash based soil stabilization for soft subgrades

Hadi Karami et al.

Summary: This study investigates how secondary additives can be used to improve the efficiency of fly ash based soil stabilization. The results indicate that secondary additives can effectively enhance the stabilization of soil when combined with fly ash. Laboratory findings were verified using 3-D numerical modeling to evaluate pavement performance, showing significant benefits in reducing pavement thickness when treating weak soils stabilized with fly ash using secondary additives.

Characterising the resilient behaviour of pavement subgrade with construction and demolition waste under Freeze-Thaw cycles

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: Recycling construction and demolition waste as fillers in pavement subgrade is a sustainable paving technology, but limited research exists on the dynamic resilient modulus characteristics of C&D waste under freeze-thaw cycles. This study aims to reveal the properties and establish a prediction model of the dynamic resilient modulus of C&D waste under various freeze-thaw cycles through laboratory tests.
