Toward the Next Generation of Sustainable Membranes from Green Chemistry Principles

Wancen Xie et al.

Summary: Although large-scale membrane technology has been widely implemented for around 40 years, its sustainability is low due to the reliance on nonbiodegradable petroleum-based polymers and hazardous solvents. To improve sustainability, biobased polymers and green solvents should replace traditional materials, while wastewater from membrane fabrication processes should be efficiently treated or recycled before discharge. Integration of artificial intelligence in membrane manufacturing processes can also enhance efficiency.

Mix-Then-On-Demand-Complex: In Situ Cascade Anionization and Complexation of Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Nanofiltration Membranes

Xiaoting Li et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new concept of mix-then-on-demand-complex for assembling 2D materials with polyelectrolytes, improving structural order and fabricating ultra-thin nanofiltration membranes with high water permeability and excellent dye rejection. Synergistic combination of hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions in the membranes created interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL that enhanced water transport efficiency.

Simultaneous photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and phenol degradation over copper sulphide-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite under visible light irradiation: Performance and reaction mechanism

Yacine Cherifi et al.

Summary: A growing challenge is the contamination of water by synthetic organic molecules and trace metals, despite substantial research efforts in water treatment. In this study, rGO-CuS nanocomposites with different rGO/CuS molar ratios were successfully fabricated, with rGO-2CuS exhibiting a remarkable enhancement in photocatalytic activity for simultaneous reduction of Cr(VI) and phenol degradation.

In situ conversion of goethite to erdite nanorods to improve the performance of doxycycline hydrochloride adsorption

Zhihua Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new method for converting goethite into nanorod erdite, providing an alternative route for reutilising goethite-bearing waste. The formed erdite nanorods showed effective adsorption capacity for doxycycline hydrochloride, with E-4 exhibiting the highest adsorption capacity among the samples tested. Additionally, the adsorption of DCH by erdite-bearing products was influenced by factors such as ionic strength and pH conditions.

Conversion of Fe-bearing minerals in sludge to nanorod erdite for real electroplating wastewater treatment: Comparative study between ferrihydrite, hematite, magnetite, and troilite

Yang Huo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the phase transformation of four Fe-bearing minerals to nanorod erdite for recycling Fe-rich sludges. Ferrihydrite was easily converted into nanorod erdite with the presence of NaOH, showing enhanced Fe dissolution at high NaOH concentration. The resulting product exhibited remarkable removal efficiency of heavy metals from electroplating wastewater.

Tannin-based thin-film composite membranes integrated with nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots for butanol dehydration through pervaporation

Rumwald Leo G. Lecaros et al.

Summary: A thin-film composite membrane was prepared through interfacial polymerization of tannic acid and acyl chloride monomers, with additional nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots. The TA-TMC membrane showed better water permselectivity for separating n-butanol/water mixture, and factors like NGQD loading amount and contact time were investigated. The membrane demonstrated potential for separating butanol from water through pervaporation.
