A lab-on-a-tube biosensor for automatic detection of foodborne bacteria using rotated Halbach magnetic separation and Raspberry Pi imaging

Wuzhen Qi et al.

Summary: A lab-on-a-tube biosensor was developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne bacteria. It utilizes a Halbach magnet to rotate magnetic nanobead chains for specific isolation of target bacteria, gold@platinum nanocatalysts for amplification of detection signal, and a Raspberry Pi App for image analysis. The biosensor showed promise in automatically detecting Salmonella in chicken samples, with a detection limit of 8 CFU/50 μl and high recovery rates.

Detection of clustered circulating tumour cells in early breast cancer

Ilona Krol et al.

Summary: By utilizing nanostructured titanium oxide-coated slides for shear-free CTC identification, this study detected clustered CTCs in multiple early breast cancer patients prior to surgical treatment, indicating their presence at early stages of the disease. These results emphasize the importance of understanding metastasis biology and the potential for anti-cluster therapeutics intervention even during the early manifestation of breast cancer.

Hyperthermia Effect of Nanoclusters Governed by Interparticle Crystalline Structures

Miseon Jeong et al.

Summary: Iron oxide nanoclusters with highly enhanced hyperthermia effect and adjustable size were successfully synthesized through a simple solvothermal method. Among them, NCs with a size of 25 nm showed the highest hyperthermia efficiency and exhibited significant heat generation on skin cancer cells. Different sized NCs had inconsistent interparticle crystalline alignments, affecting their magnetic properties and overall hyperthermia efficiency.

Vancomycin conjugated iron oxide nanoparticles for magnetic targeting and efficient capture of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

Mehnaz Rashid et al.

Summary: In this study, vancomycin-conjugated magnetite nanoparticles showed bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The nanoparticles effectively bound to the bacteria cell wall, promoting bacterial separation and growth inhibition. These nanoparticles can be promising for effective bacterial separation and killing in dispersion media.
