Assessment of trends and multi-decadal changes in groundwater level in parts of the Malwa region, Punjab, India

Sashikanta Sahoo et al.

Summary: The study found that due to uneven rainfall distribution, most agricultural lands in Malwa region of Punjab, India depend on groundwater for irrigation, with a significant declining trend in GWL observed in most wells from 1997 to 2018, especially in the eastern part. This raises concerns about the future of groundwater resources in the highly groundwater-dependent Malwa region.

A detailed assessment of meteorological drought characteristics using simplified rainfall index over Narmada River Basin, India

Sabyasachi Swain et al.

Summary: The study analyzed meteorological drought characteristics in the Narmada River Basin, India, finding a high frequency of droughts with more severe impacts in the western region compared to the east. Recent years have shown a significant increase in drought frequency, severity, and persistence in the basin.

Summary: This study utilized ASCAT soil moisture data to calculate the Basin Water Index (BWI) for six river basins in India over 10 years, and compared its relationship with observed streamflow using random forest technique and other models. The BWI-rainfall-runoff model was found to be the most accurate model, performing very well in four basins and good to satisfactory in the remaining two basins.

Summary: This paper investigates the variability in precipitation and temperature in the Upper Narmada Basin of central India from 1901 to 2002. Significant negative trends in annual precipitation and increasing trends in annual mean temperature were observed. Seasonal temperature showed significant increasing trends in spring and autumn. The study also compared parametric and nonparametric methods, confirming the reliability of the ITA method.

Integrated approach to simulate hydrological responses to land use dynamics and climate change scenarios employing scoring method in upper Narmada basin, India

Brij Kishor Pandey et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive integrated approach to simulate hydrological responses under dynamics of land use land cover (LULC) and climate change scenarios over Upper Narmada Basin, India. Best five performing climate models were selected and coupled with a semi-distributed hydrological model, with results showing increased hydrological sensitivity in the basin through multi-site calibration and parameter sensitivity analysis.

Assessment of Hydrological Drought Vulnerability using Geospatial Techniques in the Tons River Basin, India

Praveen Kalura et al.

Summary: Drought is a severe natural disaster that impacts agriculture and water resources due to water scarcity, and its occurrence can be determined by rainfall amount, duration, and frequency. By calculating the SPI-12 time series for the Tons basin over 69 years, this study identified spatial vulnerability to drought using various geospatial layers, showing that certain areas are under moderate, severe, and critical vulnerability categories. This methodology provides essential information for decision-makers to identify critical areas susceptible to drought and formulate mitigation plans.

Summary: Bangladesh, as a disaster-prone country, faces challenges from natural hazards and global climate change. The study conducted in rural char land communities by calculating the Livelihood Vulnerability Index shows a moderate level of vulnerability against natural hazards, with financial capitals being the most vulnerable. It is suggested that government interventions to enhance adaptive capacity and resilience are crucial for sustainable livelihoods in the area.
