Bacterial dormancy: A subpopulation of viable but non-culturable cells demonstrates better fitness for revival

Sariqa Wagley et al.

Summary: Members of the Proteobacteria can enter a viable but non culturable (VBNC) state as a survival strategy under stressful conditions. Using Vibrio parahaemolyticus as a model organism, distinct subpopulations in the VBNC state with different resuscitation potentials and proteomic profiles were identified. Deletion of the lactate dehydrogenase gene triggered cells to enter VBNC state, while lactate addition extended resuscitation potential. The ability to survive in VBNC state may be linked to overcoming oxidative stress.

First Insight into the Diversity and Antibacterial Potential of Psychrophilic and Psychotrophic Microbial Communities of Abandoned Amber Quarry

Margarita Shevchenko et al.

Summary: This study investigated the psychrophilic and psychrotrophic microbial communities in the flooded Walter amber quarry in Russia and found 127 genera of bacteria, with dominant groups belonging to the Clostridiales phylum Firmicutes. Enrichment cultures obtained from sediments showed antibacterial and cellulolytic activity, suggesting that these bacteria have the potential to produce antimicrobial compounds for biotechnological use.

Lake Sedimentary DNA Research on Past Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity: Overview and Recommendations

Eric Capo et al.

Summary: The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track long-term changes in terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Despite being widely applied, there are still knowledge gaps that require further research to ensure the reliability of sedimentary DNA signals. By synthesizing the latest literature and case studies, state-of-the-art analytical procedures and recommendations have been provided for effective sampling, extraction, amplification, quantification, and generation of DNA inventories from sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) using high-throughput sequencing technologies.
