Thermal modification of wood-a review: chemical changes and hygroscopicity

Summary: This paper reviews the influence of cell wall moisture content during thermal modification process on the properties of thermally modified timber (TMT). It compares TMT modified under dry and wet conditions, analyzing the role of hydroxyl groups, cell wall polymer mobility, and crosslinking in sorption behavior. The study also raises questions regarding the role of OH groups in sorption behavior based on the changes observed in TMT after water leaching post-treatment.
