Lung Ultrasound for Predicting the Respiratory Outcome in Patients with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Yusuke Hoshino et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of lung ultrasound with whole chest scanning for predicting respiratory outcomes in patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The study found that the lung ultrasound score correlated with the severity of BPD and showed an improvement trend towards discharge. The lung ultrasound score at 28 days of life was found to predict moderate-to-severe BPD and the need for home oxygen therapy.

Specification and guideline for technical aspects and scanning parameter settings of neonatal lung ultrasound examination

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound is widely used in diagnosing and monitoring neonatal lung diseases, but there can be variations in LUS images and scanning parameters that affect diagnostic accuracy. The reliability of ultrasound exams decreases in the hands of novices performing POCUS. This study aimed to create guidelines for technical aspects and scanning parameters in neonatal LUS exams to standardize image acquisition.

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of lung ultrasound in neonatology, including descriptive and functional uses. The proposed SAFE protocol for emergency functional LUS in critical neonates is highlighted, with potential future development linked to quantitative evaluation and computer-aided diagnostic techniques. Opportunities for teaching LUS and expanding the research network are also briefly presented.

Summary: This study showed that the LUS score has moderate diagnostic accuracy in predicting moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Scanning posterior lung fields slightly improved diagnostic accuracy only at the 14th day of life. Adding gestational age and sex can enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the LUS scores.

Diagnostic performance of lung ultrasound for transient tachypnea of the newborn: A meta-analysis

Lili He et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound shows high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing transient tachypnea of the neonate (TTN), with excellent accuracy in detecting TTN. However, lower sensitivity and area under the curve (AUC) were observed for B-lines, indicating the need for further large-scale studies to confirm these results.

Lung Ultrasound for Prediction of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Extreme Preterm Neonates: A Prospective Diagnostic Cohort Study

Adel Mohamed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic and predictive ability of lung ultrasound at 3 time points in the first 2 weeks after birth for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia among infants <29 weeks of gestational age. Lung ultrasound scores were significantly higher in infants diagnosed with BPD compared with those without BPD at all scan time points, with high sensitivity and specificity. The AUROC for lung ultrasound scores at the 3 time points were high, indicating a strong predictive value for the diagnosis of BPD among infants of <29 weeks of gestational age in the first 2 weeks after birth.
