A history of antimicrobial drugs in animals: Evolution and revolution

Peter Lees et al.

Summary: The evolution of antimicrobial drug (AMD) use in animals over the past eight decades has brought about revolutionary outcomes, with reports on various uses, misuses, and abuses increasing exponentially. While the treatment of animal diseases using AMDs will continue, it is crucial for it to be sustainable within the One Health paradigm and evolve towards more prudent, rational therapeutic uses. This review not only acknowledges concerns about antimicrobial resistance but also highlights the positive aspects and research-based advances resulting from the use of AMDs.

Maximum levels of cross-contamination for 24 antimicrobial active substances in non-target feed. Part 8: Pleuromutilins: tiamulin and valnemulin

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the specific concentrations of tiamulin and valnemulin in non-target feed for food-producing animals and their effects on antimicrobial resistance and growth promotion. A model called FARSC was developed to address antimicrobial resistance, but the lack of data hindered the assessment. Further research is recommended to generate the necessary data to fill the gaps for these two antimicrobials.

Maximum levels of cross-contamination for 24 antimicrobial active substances in non-target feed. Part 10: Quinolones: flumequine and oxolinic acid

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: The study assessed the specific concentrations of flumequine and oxolinic acid in feed for food-producing animals with regards to resistance in bacteria and growth promotion. However, due to lack of data, conclusions could not be drawn, and further research is recommended to fill the data gaps.

Maximum levels of cross-contamination for 24 antimicrobial active substances in non-target feed. Part 1: Methodology, general data gaps and uncertainties

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of antimicrobial concentrations in non-target feed on the resistance of microbial agents relevant for human and animal health, as well as the growth promotion effects of antimicrobials. A FARSC model was developed to estimate antimicrobial levels, and specific assessments were made for different antimicrobial classes, leading to conclusions and recommendations.

Maximum levels of cross-contamination for 24 antimicrobial active substances in non-target feed. Part 13: Diaminopyrimidines: trimethoprim

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: The study assessed the specific concentrations of trimethoprim in non-target feed for food-producing animals, as well as the antimicrobial concentrations in feed that have an effect on growth promotion. The FARSC model was applied for addressing antimicrobial resistance, and further studies were recommended to supply more diverse and complete data.

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: EFSA, in collaboration with EMA, assessed the specific concentrations of colistin and other antimicrobials in feed for their impact on antimicrobial resistance and growth promotion, using the FARSC model and scientific publication data, recommending further studies to fill data gaps.

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: The study assessed specific concentrations of tilmicosin, tylosin, and tylvalosin in feed for food-producing animals, and their impact on bacterial resistance and growth promotion. The Feed Antimicrobial Resistance Selection Concentration (FARSC) model was used for the assessment of antimicrobial resistance, while scientific publications were utilized for growth promotion evaluation. Additional studies are recommended to fill the data gaps for tylvalosin.

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: EFSA, in collaboration with EMA, assessed specific concentrations of amprolium in non-target feed and specific antimicrobial concentrations in feed for growth promotion. The assessment was based on the Feed Antimicrobial Resistance Selection Concentration (FARSC) model, but a lack of data prevented a conclusion on antimicrobial resistance. Data from scientific publications were used to report levels of amprolium in feed affecting growth promotion.
