Effect of extended grading capacitor on the interrupting performance of multi-break circuit breaker during out-of-step faults

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of extended grading capacitor (EGC) on the interrupting performance of multi-break circuit breaker (CB) during out-of-step fault. It establishes an equivalent circuit model for UHV line, derives the voltages on power source side and line side, obtains the expressions of transient recovery voltage (TRV) and rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV). The results show that EGC can significantly smooth the TRV during the first few microseconds of out-of-step fault, enhancing the breaking capability of CB.
