Spatial effect of environmental regulation on green innovation efficiency: Evidence from prefectural-level cities in China

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental regulation (ER) on green innovation efficiency (GIE) in prefecture-level cities in China from a spatial correlation perspective. The empirical results show that GIE first declined and then increased, with a significant spatial spillover effect of ER on GIE showing a U-shaped impact. Shorter official tenure and lower enterprises' profitability weakened the impact of ER on GIE. The government should strengthen regional cooperation, improve public environmental supervision, and formulate stringent but differentiated ER based on local conditions.

Analysis of subnational CO2 mitigation policy pressure in the residential sector in China

Summary: By developing the Carbon Emissions Reduction Index (CERI) and utilizing the refined Laspeyres technique, this study evaluated the CO2 mitigation policy pressure in the residential sector in 29 provinces and 286 cities in China. The results showed that although the average CO2 mitigation policy pressure in the residential sector was increasing, there were differences between provinces and cities, with CO2 intensity and inequality being key factors influencing the changes.

Market-based environmental regulation and total factor productivity: Evidence from Chinese enterprises*

Summary: This study uses China's recent SO2 Emissions Trading Pilot as an experiment to identify the productivity effects of market-based environmental regulation on Chinese industrial enterprises. The results suggest that the regulation has significant productivity-enhancing effects, especially for privately owned, more productive, and less pollution-intensive enterprises. Additionally, there is a dynamic productivity-enhancing effect that tends to decay slowly over time.
