Investigating sources, driving forces and potential health risks of nitrate and fluoride in groundwater of a typical alluvial fan plain

Yong Xiao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the changes in groundwater chemistry are driven by both water-rock interaction and anthropogenic influences. Anthropogenic inputs/influences are the dominant factors increasing groundwater nitrate content and salinity, posing potential noncarcinogenic risks to various populations through oral intake pathway. Rational measures should be taken to protect groundwater quality out of the threats of anthropogenic pollution.

Groundwater chemistry and demarcation of seawater intrusion zones in the Thamirabarani delta of south India based on geochemical signatures

V Satheeskumar et al.

Summary: The geochemical characteristics of sub-surface water samples from the delta of Thamirabarani River in south India were evaluated to assess human health risks and seawater intrusion. The study found that over 40% of the samples were unsuitable for drinking, with seawater intrusion and anthropogenic activities being contributing factors. By analyzing the interrelationship between ions in sub-surface water, a better understanding of saline water intrusion can be obtained, leading to proposed engineering solutions to address seawater incursion.

Groundwater quality for potable and irrigation uses and associated health risk in southern part of Gu'an County, North China Plain

Yahong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study area in the North China Plain faces challenges with groundwater quality due to heavy abstraction for drinking and irrigation purposes. Evaluations showed that while deep groundwater is generally suitable for drinking, there are non-carcinogenic health risks posed by certain water samples for both adults and children. Additionally, carcinogenic risks from toxic elements like Cr6+ are present in the drinking water, highlighting the need for improved sewage management in industries to prevent further deterioration of water quality.

Hydrogeochemical evaluation, suitability, and health risk assessment of groundwater in the watershed of Godavari basin, Maharashtra, Central India

Deepali Marghade et al.

Summary: This investigation in the semi-arid area of Godavari basin in Maharashtra, Central India, focused on the geochemical progression of groundwater samples during the pre-monsoon season. The study identified carbonate and silicate weathering as major processes governing groundwater chemistry, along with a reverse ion exchange process and the presence of dissolved minerals such as calcite and dolomite. Recommendations include continuous water quality monitoring and effective management practices to prevent excessive extraction of groundwater.

Summary: The study revealed that institutional structural and functional weakness is the main issue in groundwater resource management. Cultural elements, legal weakness, and weak organizational management also impact groundwater resource management. Additionally, unauthorized exploitation through drilling wells and unplanned extraction is identified as a major cause of the problem, with the implementation of water engineering and control measures proposed as a key strategy.

Origin and controlling factors of groundwater chemistry and quality in the Zhiluo aquifer system of northern Ordos Basin, China

Shen Qu et al.

Summary: The northern Ordos Basin in China is an important coal mining area, where the Zhiluo sandstone aquifers are a major source of drinking water. Groundwater in the northern and southern areas shows distinct hydrochemical characteristics, with differences likely due to water-rock interactions and coal mining activities. Attention should be given to preventing water inrush events during mining and water treatment is needed in the southern area where groundwater quality exceeds safe limits for drinking and irrigation. Factors such as mining activity, ground temperature, groundwater flow velocity, and groundwater circulation play a key role in determining local groundwater hydrochemistry and quality.
