Divergent Controls on Stream Greenhouse Gas Concentrations Across a Land-Use Gradient

Allison M. Herreid et al.

Summary: Inland waters, especially streams, are significant sources of greenhouse gases such as CO2, CH4, and N2O. This study found spatial and temporal variability in GHG concentrations in 20 streams in New England, USA, and identified unique predictor variables for each gas. Developing an understanding of the factors controlling GHG dynamics in streams can help assess and predict how fluvial ecosystems will respond to changes in climate and land use.

Spatial and temporal heterogeneity of methane ebullition in lowland headwater streams and the impact on sampling design

Andrew L. Robison et al.

Summary: Research in lowland headwater streams in the temperate northeastern United States found that CH4 ebullition rates exhibit temporal and spatial heterogeneity, increasing with temperature. Land use was found to have a weak predictive power on this heterogeneity, with factors like water depth and sediment organic matter content and quality playing a more significant role.

Intense methane ebullition from urban inland waters and its significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions

Gongqin Wang et al.

Summary: The study measured the concentrations and fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in rivers and lakes in the megacity of Beijing, China, finding high CH4 emissions from urban inland waters, with ebullition playing a significant role. The CH4 emissions accounted for 20% of CO2 emissions in terms of the carbon release and were 1.7 times higher in terms of CO2 equivalent emissions from Beijing inland waters, indicating a positive feedback between greenhouse gas emissions and climate warming.

Half of global methane emissions come from highly variable aquatic ecosystem sources

Judith A. Rosentreter et al.

Summary: The study shows that aquatic ecosystems play a significant role in global methane emissions, with emissions varying greatly within and between different types of aquatic systems. Methane emissions increase from natural to impacted aquatic ecosystems and from coastal to freshwater ecosystems.

Low Diffusive Methane Emissions From the Main Channel of a Large Amazonian Run-of-the-River Reservoir Attributed to High Methane Oxidation

Henrique O. Sawakuchi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated CH4 dynamics in a tropical run-of-the-river (ROR) reservoir in the Amazon region, showing higher CH4 production in reservoirs' littoral sediment than in naturally flooded areas downstream of the dam. Despite high CH4 oxidation rates in the main channel, the concentration and fluxes of CH4 remained low. Maintaining mixing and oxygenation throughout the reservoir's water column could limit diffusive CH4 emissions from the main channel, while the presence of less oxidized CH4 after the dam suggests the need for further assessment on the reservoir's impact on annual CH4 emissions.

Carbon dioxide hydrodynamics along a wetland-lake-stream-waterfall continuum (Blue Mountains, Australia)

Arun Looman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the small-scale spatial variability in dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) and water-air CO2 flux dynamics in first-order catchments of the upper Blue Mountains Plateau in New South Wales, Australia. The results showed that wetlands and lakes had the highest CO2 supersaturation, while CO2 approached atmospheric equilibrium at escarpment waterfalls. High resolution sampling was essential in identifying CO2 outgassing hotspots, with over 95% of excess dissolved CO2 outgassed to the atmosphere in these geomorphically diverse catchments.
