The tribological behavior of iron tailing sand grain contacts in dry, water and biopolymer immersed states

Jing Ren et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation on the tribological behavior of tailing grain contacts revealed that factors such as saturation conditions, biopolymer coating, and abrasion significantly influence the friction. Inter-particle friction was found to be higher in tailing grains compared to quartz grains, with abrasion, high roughness, and biopolymer coating identified as major factors affecting the frictional behavior.

Effect of Initial Density, Particle Shape, and Confining Stress on the Critical State Behavior of Weathered Gap-Graded Granular Soils

X. S. Shi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the overall shear strength of gap-graded soils is not solely dependent on the confining stress and coarse fraction, but also influenced by factors such as the shape of aggregates and the initial density of sand matrix. The partial contacts between aggregates and formation of sand bridges play significant roles in the overall behavior of gap-graded soils.

3D DEM insights into the effect of particle overall regularity on macro and micro mechanical behaviours of dense sands

Jia-Yan Nie et al.

Summary: Particle shape affects the mechanical properties of sands and this study used DEM to simulate the realistic behavior of sand particles with different shapes. The research found that decreasing overall regularity enhances the interlock effect between particles, leading to higher stiffness and shear strength in the granular assembly.

Particle shape effects on the shear behaviors of granular assemblies: irregularity and elongation

M. Q. Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of particle shape irregularity and elongation on the shear behaviors of granular materials using the 3D discrete element method (DEM). The results show that considering complex shaped particles in DEM produces more realistic sand behaviors, with shear strength and dilation of the granular material increasing with irregularity and elongation. Irregularity positively affects the critical state line (CSL) parameters, while elongation has insignificant influence on the CSL location.

Isotropic compression behavior of granular assembly with non-spherical particles by X-ray micro-computed tomography and discrete element modeling

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study utilized X-ray computed tomography (μCT) and discrete element modeling (DEM) to investigate the isotropic compression behavior of a granular assembly in relation to particle morphological properties. It was found that particle concavity and interparticle friction had significant influences on the compression behavior of granular assemblies. Microscopic analysis provided insights into the characteristics of granular assembly under isotropic compression.

A spherical-harmonic-based approach to discrete element modeling of 3D irregular particles

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative and computationally effective DEM method that directly utilizes spherical harmonic functions for simulating 3D irregular-shaped particles. By representing discrete surface points of particles with a limited number of harmonic coefficients and computing physical quantities using spherical harmonic functions, specific algorithms for interparticle contact resolution and overlapping detection are developed, leading to computation of contact forces, moments, and particle movements. The feasibility and capability of the proposed method are demonstrated through simulations, indicating its potential for realistic modeling in various engineering and industrial processes.
