Utilizing plant species for inexpensive and efficient vaccine production can help improve global vaccine distribution to resource-limited countries. Through expressing the RBD of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in a glycoengineered tobacco plant, this study successfully generated a candidate subunit vaccine that induced humoral immunity in mice. These findings lay a strong foundation for further development of plant-expressed RBD antigens as effective, safe, and affordable SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, showcasing the potential of plant species in vaccine development.
