Accumulation of radioisotopes and heavy metals in selected species of mushrooms

Oskar Ronda et al.

Summary: Seven species of forest mushrooms from different regions of Poland were analyzed for radioisotope activity and heavy metal concentrations. The results showed that consuming mushrooms may lead to exceeding the consumption limits for cadmium, copper, and Cs-137.

Radiocaesium in Tricholoma spp. from the Northern Hemisphere in 1971-2016

Jerzy Falandysz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the accumulation of radiocaesium in wild Tricholoma mushrooms sourced from the Northern Hemisphere over the last five decades, highlighting species differences in accumulation and the observed contamination levels in specific species. The uneven spatial distribution of data makes it challenging to identify temporal contamination patterns, while monitoring Cs-137 activity in wild mushrooms is recommended for further consolidation of observations.

Levels of 137Cs in game and soil in Opole Anomaly, Poland in 2012-2020

Grzegorz Olos et al.

Summary: The study reveals that radiocesium, once deposited, remains in the environment for a long time and constantly enters the food chain, especially in heavily contaminated areas, caution should be taken when consuming meat products made from local game. In the Opole Anomaly in Poland, one of the most Cs-137 contaminated regions in Europe, the research aimed to assess the Cs-137 activity and effective dose received by consumers of local game meat. It is the first study regarding Cs-137 activity in game and risk assessment from the most contaminated post-Chernobyl area in Poland.

An evaluation of the occurrence and trends in 137Cs and 40K radioactivity in King Bolete Boletus edulis mushrooms in Poland during 1995-2019

Jerzy Falandysz et al.

Summary: The study analyzed B.edulis collected from different forested sites in Poland over a 25-year period since 1995 for radiocaesium levels. The results indicated that the higher radiocaesium levels detected earlier were consistent with depositions from the Chernobyl incident fallout plumes. Despite some fluctuations, the data suggests that Cs-137 concentrations were generally higher during 1995-2010 compared to the period 1986-1994.
