Carbon under pressure

Bertil Sundqvist

Summary: The physical properties and structural transformations of various solid carbon allotropes under high pressure experiments were reviewed, revealing similarities and differences in high pressure behavior and evolution. Despite extensive experimental work, few new structural allotropes were identified and most carbon materials convert into diamond at high temperature and pressure.

Recent advances in the removal of pharmaceuticals and endocrine-disrupting compounds in the aquatic system: A case of polymer inclusion membranes

Ayo Olasupo et al.

Summary: The presence of pharmaceuticals and endocrine-disrupting compounds in aquatic systems has raised concerns due to their potential threats to aquatic organisms and human health. Conventional wastewater treatment plants have limitations in removing these contaminants, leading to the exploration of advanced treatment processes. Polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) are considered a promising technology for water treatment, with high efficiency in removing contaminants from water.

Probe into the Molecular Mechanism of Ibuprofen Interaction with Warfarin Bound to Human Serum Albumin in Comparison to Ascorbic and Salicylic Acids: Allosteric Inhibition of Anticoagulant Release

Hamid Reza Kalhor et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of commonly used drugs on the release of warfarin bound to HSA in silico. Both s-ibuprofen and ascorbic acid were found to exhibit allosteric effects on the release of warfarin from HSA, with ibuprofen showing a stabilizing effect and ascorbic acid aiding in the release through destabilization of HSA. Molecular dynamics simulations provided valuable insights into the interactions of drugs with the protein and the mechanism of anticoagulant release.

Facile and green synthesis of reduced graphene oxide for remediation of Hg(II)-contaminated water

Dineo Nhlane et al.

Summary: The study reported the application of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) obtained via a one-pot, green synthetic approach for treatment of Hg(II) contaminated water. The reduction and functionalization of GO to rGO increased Hg(II) removal by >15%, with optimal adsorption observed at pH 4. The results demonstrate the potential of using rGO derived from L-cysteine as an efficient and cost-effective method for treating Hg-contaminated water.
