Early Mobilization during Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Cardiopulmonary Failure in Adults Factors Associated with Intensity of Treatment

Darryl Abrams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with achieving out-of-bed physical therapy in ECMO-supported patients and assess the safety and feasibility of early mobilization with femoral cannulation. The results showed that pre-transplantation, venovenous ECMO, later cannulation year, and higher Charlson comorbidity index were associated with increased odds of achieving out-of-bed physical therapy, while invasive mechanical ventilation and femoral cannulation were associated with decreased odds. Physical therapy with femoral cannulation was safe, feasible, and had low complication rates.

In Vitro Testing and Comparison of Additively Manufactured Polymer Impellers for the CentriMag Blood Pump

Kai Von Petersdorff-Campen et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is an effective tool for accelerating knowledge gain in development processes, as it allows for the production of complex prototypes at low cost and with short lead times. The study compared four commonly used AM processes for polymers in terms of manufacturing accuracy, surface roughness, and shape fidelity in an aqueous environment. The results showed that the replicas produced by stereolithography had the lowest surface roughness and exhibited the least deviation in hydraulic testing, suggesting a flow-dependent threshold of roughness for cell lysis.

Migrated Avalon-Elite cannula in an infant transcatheter repositioning without interruption of ECMO flow

Robin Hay-son Chen et al.

Summary: This case report describes successful transcatheter repositioning of an Avalon-Elite cannula for a small infant on VV-ECMO support, without interrupting ECMO flow, despite two episodes of inadvertent cannula migration. This approach may offer a less invasive and more efficient way to manage cannula migration in such cases.

Physiological Basis of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation and Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal in Respiratory Failure

Barbara Ficial et al.

Summary: ECLS for severe respiratory failure has seen significant growth, with ECMO and ECCO2R as two modalities providing support to native lung function. Understanding the physiological principles of gas exchange during respiratory ECLS and their interactions with native gas exchange and hemodynamics is crucial for safe application in clinical practice.

Awake ECMO and mobilizing patients on ECMO

Jumana Yusuf Haji et al.

Summary: ECMO is a lifesaving technology for critically ill patients, but may face challenges in low-income countries due to lack of trained personnel. Managing and ambulating awake patients on ECMO is labor-intensive and requires overcoming various challenges. Each ECMO program should develop goals, methods, and protocols to decrease treatment costs.
