A Gut-Brain Axis-on-a-Chip for studying transport across epithelial and endothelial barriers

Min-Hyeok Kim et al.

Summary: Recent research indicates that the gut luminal environment can impact behavior, emotion, and cognitive abilities in the brain via various signaling pathways, with exosomes potentially mediating the communication. Advances in organ-on-a-chip technology have led to the development of a modular microfluidic chip for studying the interaction between the gut and the brain, which showed promise in facilitating the transport of exosomes across barriers. This model represents a novel in vitro approach to studying Gut-Brain Axis interactions.

Direct Amperometric Sensing of Fish Nodavirus RNA Using Gold Nanoparticle/DNA-Based Bioconjugates

Nadia Cherif et al.

Summary: A simple and highly sensitive electrochemical bioanalytical method was designed to directly detect a conserved RNA region within the capsid protein gene of a fish nodavirus, using nanostructured disposable electrodes. The method showed a linear response over a range of RNA concentrations, with a detection limit of 20 fM, and was validated using RNA samples from healthy carrier fish and clinically infected fish specimens. The results were in good agreement with those from RT-qPCR, indicating a promising approach for more effective diagnosis and risk assessment of viral diseases in aquaculture.

A microfluidic device enabling deterministic single cell trapping and release

Huichao Chai et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel microfluidic device with high-efficiency cell trapping and deterministic release is presented. The device includes capillary valves that can open in a predefined pattern to sequentially trap incoming cells into separate sites. Experiments using MCF-7 cells demonstrated the capability of the device for deterministic single cell trapping and release, showing promise as a useful platform for single cell analysis.

Real-time red blood cell counting and osmolarity analysis using a photoacoustic-based microfluidic system

Wenxiu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of photoacoustic detection for characterizing RBCs, which is faster and less invasive compared to traditional methods. Compared to conventional microfluidic analysis methods using camera-captured image sequences, the photoacoustic method requires only processing one-dimensional time-series data, resulting in lower computational requirements.
