Short Ligand, Cysteine-Modified Warnericin RK Antimicrobial Peptides Favor Highly Sensitive Detection of Legionella pneumophila

M. Amirul Islam et al.

Summary: The use of cysteine-modified warnericin RK AMP successfully operated a highly sensitive biosensor for L. pneumophila based on GaAs/AlGaAs nanoheterostructures, significantly reducing the distance at which bacteria are immobilized above the biosensor surface and achieving a detection limit of 2 x 10(2) CFU per mL. This approach also resulted in capturing the target bacteria four times more efficiently than other bacteria, showing great promise for environmental monitoring.

Legionellosis Caused by Non-Legionella pneumophila Species, with a Focus on Legionella longbeachae

Stephen T. Chambers et al.

Summary: Although Legionella pneumophila is commonly known to cause community-acquired pneumonia and Pontiac fever, infections caused by other Legionella species are often underestimated globally. L. longbeachae has been identified as a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia in Australia and New Zealand, particularly linked to exposure to potting soils and compost. Genetic studies have shown that Legionella has highly adaptable genomes, which contributes to its pathogenesis and survival strategies. Efforts to prevent legionellosis are hindered by surveillance limitations and variable effectiveness of current prevention strategies.

Water Sampling Module for Collecting and Concentrating Legionella pneumophila from Low-to-Medium Contaminated Environment

Khalid Moumanis et al.

Summary: Detection of Legionella pneumophila in water is crucial for manufacturers of water processing equipment and public health entities. Preconcentration steps are necessary for detection methods such as polymerase chain reaction or biosensor technologies to achieve desired sensitivity levels. The designed water sampling module can concentrate bacteria in water samples with different concentration factors, depending on the level of contamination.
